DENTAL HEALTH IN INDIA
State of dental health awareness in India:
India is a vast country with over 1000 million people.
Nearly 125 dental producing over 3000 each year.
Present dentist number is estimated approx. 30,000.
70% population lives in villages, served very poorly by
dentists.
Level of dental education among pubic is low.
Consumption of Tobacco in various forms is high &
is on the rise, leading to high incidence of Oral cancer,
Dental caries and periodontal problems.
Many areas have high fluoride in drinking water this has
been used by lobby to prevent any national policy on use
of fluorides for controlling dental caries.
Dental services & education very low on Govt. priority
list
One national and several specialty associations. Membership
of Indian dental association is only about 7000.
Only one national journal, infrequent publication and
standard questionable.
General dental practitioners poorly served-Intense need
to have continuing education/distance learning programs
to raise the level of their practice/knowledge.
Duties of a dentist can be classified into three areas:
Prevention of Oral Diseases
Restore and remove diseased teeth
Educate the public on good dental hygiene
Advise patients on proper brushing and flossing, diet
and dental care
Teach patients to care for their teeth and prevent gum
diseases that not only give bad breath but destroy jaw
bones that support the teeth.
Restoration of Personal Appearance
Crown or cap teeth through orthodontic treatment (correction
of crooked teeth)
Make and fit dentures or false teeth
Oral Cancers and Jaw Fractures
Detect and treat cancer of the mouth
Examine injuries in the mouth and face, including broken
jaws
Operate on these parts (jaw surgery) to restore a patient's
facial appearance
Personal Qualities
Manual dexterity and able to do precise and detailed work
Good communication skills
Able to concentrate
Enjoy work with people
Patient and calm to cope with anxious and worried patients
Must have good health and eyesight |
