Earthquake in Gujarat

A massive earthquake rocked India and the neighbouring areas at 8:46 A.M (IST), on the 26th of January. The worst hit area in India was the State of Gujarat where the death toll is feared to reach over 25,000 and is expected to rise since a lot of people are still under the debries. The most affected places in Gujarat are Bhuj,Bachau and the city of Ahmedabad. In the epicentre of the quake near Bhuj the toll has mounted to over 15,000. In Ahmedabad, especially in Maninagar and Satellite majority of deaths have been caused by house collapse as nearly a 100 multi-storeyed buildings and highrise have collapsed.

The quake has caused fullscale power failure and the communication lines have been cut , the roadways have caved in and the railway property has been damaged. The bulldozers were brought to the site but proved to be useless in areas where buildings are in precarious positions. The army has been called in for the rescue operation. The airforce has been carrying rescue teams and even the spectators have pitched in to rescue the quake victims from the rubble.
